Taborns Legal Business - Will Taborn Ltd in London: Review
If you've read review articles on our site before then you'll know that we usually cover quite a bit of ground including regulatory databases, third party forums, snippets from across the site, quotes from peer groups, and so on. We either try to provide those bits and pieces you might not have known about the firm - or try and summarise if there is an overwhelmingly large amount of information for people to find themselves.
You'll have noticed that we are very selective about the firms we add to our database. Never more than a handful of law practices within the same area covering the same case types. They will also generally have different appeal. For example if you were seeking help with a tax matter, we may show you options of a regular high street solicitor, a direct access barrister, and a regular accountants office. Depending on your particular need one may be far more suited than the other.
We don't always have a lot of information to go on. We have several firms on the network that are brand new startups, consultants, or sole practitioners. That typically means a much smaller number of organisations to verify everything with and/or zero reviews across independent boards. On those occasions we have to use our 'gut' backed by 20+ years experience working with law firms across the UK. Otherwise all we would list for you are the large brand named multi-office firms - and that too is not always the best fit or even available in the more rural areas.
So what caught our eye about Taborns?
Certainly the website has much of the standard language and sales-pitchy adjectives you've probably seen across a dozen sites already. No matter how hard a firm tries, that's just how things come out. But Taborns has a very different approach to business law compared to the regular City-based commercial law firms. In fact, Taborns' setup had a very familiar ring to it.
Unlike a business law solicitor who will be good at some things and less-experienced in other areas - Taborns main goal is to find out what you're goal is in order to determine what type of help you need and then source the best person to help you acheive that.
Sadly when it comes to business law, costs can vary far more than with consumer matters. If you're a business person yourself, you've probably seen the numerous 'company furniture catalogues' that seems to list £200 chairs you know you can buy for £25 from your local Argos. The price you might pay for a simple thing such as a business contract to be drawn up might be five times more with a large commercial law firm compared to a sole practitioner. On top of that, the cheaper service may be a legal professional that handles nothing but business contracts day in day out making them the more experienced option.
Taborns offer a "Legal Concierge Outsourcing" service which doesn't seem to have a very in-depth explanation on the website:
However the gist of it is probably exactly how the name makes it sound. Taborns is therefore much more of a business legal solutions provider than just a case handler.
Unfortunately, despite the firm having been running for some years now - there weren't any public reviews we could find on the regular review boards. These are therefore some snippets from the company's own testimonials section on their website:
"We were looking for high quality legal professionals, in a short period of time. Taborns went above and beyond to understand our requirements and source the individuals we needed."
"Taborns interact seamlessly between barrister and client, and their instructions are thorough."
They also have a genuine News section. Unlike most firms that use the News/Blog area to simply write a bunch of extra thinly disguised sales pitches - these are some real articles with highly niche topics. A piece on the University of Oxford appealling for help with a legal dispute AI-based system. A discussion on a recent survey of over 130 in-house lawyers about their legal spend projections under the Coronavirus pandemic. A warning about the growing concerns over the number of legal aid Barristers leaving the Bar. These are not light-hearted pandering titles.
When nagivating the firm's name is quite unique so any searches for Taborns, Taborns Business Law, Will Taborn, etc. should bring up the correct website on search engines. Just watch out for adverts Google slips in at the top as they allow advertisers to stuff matching keywords in sometimes. The official site we link to above is www.taborns.com (www.taborns.co.uk does not bring anything up right now) and whilst the branding is simply 'Taborns' it is the Will Taborn Ltd name that will bring up other relevant information such as companies house. Please note that W Taborn & Co is not the same company, they are some sort of luggage manufacturer in London.
Hopefully after reading this it's a little clearer why we added this particular firm to our network despite the lack of the usual information we tend to rely on in order to make our decisions. In our opinion it's a unique service that someone has thought out and taken time to put together in order to help business owners get the right type of help and avoid overpaying. As mentioned in the initial paragraphs, that's something we felt was lacking in the industry as a whole and was the reason/goal our 1to1Legal service was born. We're just at a different point in the chain. A last word from Taborns:
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Taborns Legal Business it's best to visit the website (www.taborns.com), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
