DFA Law LLP Solicitors in Northampton: Review

Sometimes when researching a company online people tend to just look up some reviews on their favourite review site and then decide. For legal matters though, a handful of comments by clients who may have not had anything like the issues you're looking to resolve - is that enough? For making a quick Will, maybe. For larger life-changing matters, maybe not.

Luckily there are a lot more resources online to help choose a law firm than is probably known to most people. In this review we'll try and point out the most useful we've found. There is a lot to find between-the-lines in the wording firms use on their website too. For example, this from the DFA Law website:

"DFA Law has been advising clients in Northamptonshire, and across the region, for over 180 years."

DFA Law LLP

We've mentioned in previous articles that long establishment dates are not the be-all and end-all when choosing a firm. A 40-year established firm might stick you with a 1-year experienced solicitor, and a 1-year established firm might have a 40-year experience partner on staff. We guarantee you there is no 200-year-old solicitor sitting behind the desk of any law firm in the UK. (Despite some that may look it.)

The main thing to watch out for is if a law firm use phrases such as 'we have over 80 years of experience within the firm'. That simply means their marketing guy has added all the working years of the staff together. For example 7 staff members each with 3 years experience can be written as 'over 20 years of combined experience'. Which sounds great, but in reality the person assigned to you has only 3 years' experience themselves. DFA Law on the other hand has both a long establishment date and well-experienced staff on board:

"We have specialist legal departments who each tackle particular areas of law providing expert and dedicated advice to both businesses and individuals."

Most firms have a statement like this on their website. So how do we know DFA Law have experience staff? Most legal professionals are signed up to a local Law Society. DFA Law are with The Law Society of England & Wales and if you check the page about them on the organisation's website - you'll be provided with quite a bit of information. Alternative contact details, other offices, SRA authority information, practice case focuses and more. The English/Welsh Law Society's website is actually the best we've seen amongst it's peers. A tough thing to admit with us being a Scottish company, so it must be true.

The site will also provide you with individual details of various staff members. As you'll see, DFA Law have a wide range of experienced staff such as Peter Critchell and John Keeble who qualified as solicitors in 1985 and 1997 respectively. Right up to Michael Nadin (qualified in 2010) and Christopher De Luca (qualified 2019). A really good mix of old, wiser heads running a firm that still has some young-blood eager to prove themselves. Always a good sign.

It's clearly working for them too because the public records for the firm show a thriving business at the time of writing. But what about the client reviews we mentioned at the start? Certainly the firm has glowing testimonials on their website:

"... always very approachable, both personal contact and by email"

"very courteous , explained everything thoroughly ..."

"... I received excellent and thorough advice throughout"

However a poll we ran a couple of years ago indicated that people didn't really trust testimonials on company websites. In any industry, not just for law. So do the independent review boards match up?

"Professional, efficient and easy to deal with."

"... amazed how responsive and reliable Amy was throughout every step of the process"

"Our estate agent expressed their astonishment when everything was handed in so quickly compared to other solicitors ..."

We flicked through the usual forums such as Google, Yelp, Trustpilot, Yell.com etc. and they were all much like these snippets above. There are a few little touches around their site too that indicate a firm with a vested interest in their public perception. If you've been through quite a few solicitor's websites already you'll have noticed that their Blog/News section is usually just half a dozen extra sales-pitch articles. However the DFA Law news section has genuine articles intended to inform people about real matters. Titles such as "The end of ‘furlough’ – what now?", "Employment Tribunal fees abolished with immediate effect" and "Commercial Property – Changes to the Use Classes Order" are just that extra flourish we think shows mindfulness towards their industry and consumers as a whole.

A quick note on navigation. The official site we link to above is www.dfalaw.co.uk which is https secure for you to safely submit your personal details on the web form. The www.dfalaw.com site is for a completely different law firm and several other possible variants people might accidentally try like www.dfasolicitors.co.uk were not owned by anyone.

Whenever we discuss a firm that deals with property matters we always advise bookmarking the correct site once you're on it and making sure to check the email address of any communications you receive. Property clients are heavily targeted by scammers due to the amounts of money being pushed around and many clients and law firms have fallen victim to such scams in recent years. So be careful, and we even recommend never giving bank details to someone that rings you. You can always hang up and call them back on the phone number you know is definitely for the firm.

A last word from the DFA Law website which hopefully now sounds little more sincere after having checked through the extra bits and pieces above. Obviously we were impressed enough with this firm to add them to our network:

"We pride ourselves on our levels of service, independence and value. Our experienced lawyers have the knowledge and expertise that can help you."

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with DFA Law LLP it's best to visit the website (www.dfalaw.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
