Not sure whether you need a legal professional? Most law firms will offer at least a free phone call to discuss your needs and you should be offered impartial advice as to whether hiring a law firm is required. Always ask to speak to a qualified individual though before relaying the more in-depth details of the case. Don't be afraid to ring round and ask several firms about free consultations to try and get a better idea before deciding how to proceed or who with.

Jurisdiction over a person refers to the full authority over a person regardless on where they live, jurisdiction over a particular subject matter refers to the authority over the said subject of legal cases involved in a case, and lastly, territorial jurisdiction is the authority over a person within an x amount of space. Summary offences, such as most motoring offences, are much less serious and most must be tried in a magistrates' court, although a few may be sent for trial to the Crown Court along with other offences that may be tried there (for example assault). In the common law system, most courts follow the adversarial system. Most matters were tried by a county court judge, and where necessary, a jury. Students who decide to pursue a non-law subject at degree level can instead study the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) after their degrees, before beginning the Legal Practice Course (LPC) or BPTC.

They will be called to it from the jury waiting area (benches next to it) to be sworn in. If it believes that a heavier sentence is appropriate, it must refer the case to the Superior Number for sentencing. Some civil matters are also decided here, notably family proceedings. It was ultimately replaced by separate Courts of Appeal in each of the two bailiwicks. The offices of the Official Solicitor to the Supreme Court and the Public Trustee are now housed in one office building, but they continue to have separate functions. In the US, "solicitor" is also used synonymously with salesman (with a pejorative connotation roughly equivalent to the British English word tout) as in the signed warning on public places of accommodation, "No Soliciting". The advantage of the latter regime is that lawyers are familiar with the court's customs and procedures, and make the legal system more efficient for all involved. A solicitor is someone who carries out specific legal activities, having undergone specialist studies and training.

The High Court of Justice functions both as a civil court of first instance and a criminal and civil appellate court for cases from the subordinate courts. The Legal Practitioner's Act, refers to Nigerian lawyers as Legal Practitioners, and following their call to the Bar, Nigerian lawyers enter their names in the register or Roll of Legal Practitioners kept at the Supreme Court. The change was meant to enable judges who have suitable expertise and experience in the specialist business and property jurisdictions to be cross-deployed to sit in the specialist courts, while continuing existing practices for cases that proceed in them. Until unification in 2014, county courts were local courts in the sense that each one has an area over which certain kinds of jurisdiction, for example, proceedings for possession of land had to be started in the county court in whose district the property lay, but in general any county court in England and Wales could hear any action and claims were frequently transferred from court to court. Originally, the High Court consisted of five divisions the King's Bench, Common Pleas, Exchequer, Chancery, and Probate, Divorce and Admiralty divisions.
