McShanes Solicitors based in Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland: Review

Established in 1973, McShanes is one of the leading legal firms in Northern Ireland. They've striven for a reputation as: a high-quality service with first-class technical ability and commercial acumen. They are licensed to practice in the Republic of Ireland, and they were the first law firm in NI to achieve the internationally recognised ISO EN 9001 Standard. They have also been awarded the Lexcel Practice Management Standard by the Law Society. Again, the first firm in Northern Ireland to achieve such.

Certainly, the firm is very much focused on quality as you read through their website. They boast about their recruitment procedures which are designed to ensure they employ staff of "the highest calibre". They talk about their ongoing training and development programmes to "maintain the highest standards at all times". They state heavy investment in their case management, IT, and accounting systems to ensure a polished performance at all stages.

As for their client-oriented goals - they state each client will have their own solicitor responsible for the handling of their case. They promise to keep you advised of any cost implications of your case, to keep you fully informed of all developments in your case, to keep you informed of any relevant changes in the law, and to regularly review the progress of the case with you.

McShanes Solicitors

They do this on a wide range of legal issues. Unusually for a law firm, whilst they do have the general vague case descriptions in places such as Family Law, Personal Injury, etc. - they also have a very specific list of case titles, such as Proceeds of Crime Investigations, Adoption, Assets Recovery, Defamation and Privacy, Equal Rights, Domestic Violence, and more. There are a few different names, such as Criminal Representation rather than the more common Criminal Defence or Criminal Law. But with such a wide case range, it would probably be worth asking about your legal issue over the phone even if you don't see a case title that matches exactly.

McShanes are widely recognised as a leading residential property solicitor in Northern Ireland. They advise on every aspect of buying, selling or letting a property. Fee quotations are focused not just on price, but on speed.

Whilst emphasising the importance of a will quite strongly in relation to how the law treats estates with no will - they do promise to offer practical and jargon-free will-making advice.

Most people want an accident injury firm that has a reputation for obtaining high awards of compensation for their clients in personal injury cases. McShanes claim such a reputation but (thankfully) do not cover their website with crass stories about the, often uncommon, super-large payouts achieved. Many firms we see during our day to day work, will devote large sections of their website to talking about a single £million settlement they achieved several years ago - when 99% of the time that is not a potential outcome. No 'compensation calculators' or 'free iPad just for enquiring!' promotions with this firm. Of course, we probably wouldn't have them on the network if they were so inclined.

On the business side of things they deal with issues related to employment or staffing issues, commercial disputes, debt recovery, health and safety regulations, strategic planning, restructuring or selling your business, and more.

As for the partners at the firm. There are four at the time of writing this.

Aoife McShane trained in England at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, attended the Institute of Professional Legal Studies. She then became a solicitor in Northern Ireland dealing with civil litigation cases and family law.

Rory McShane has a QUB BA Diploma in Social Studies, is a solicitor in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, has been President of Law Society in Northern Ireland, and is responsible for litigation, commercial property, public and administrative law, assets recovery and insolvency.

Paul O’Kane attended Manchester University, the Institute of Professional Legal studies, and like Rory is also a solicitor in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. He is responsible for litigation, criminal law, commercial conveyancing, employment law and equal rights.

Mary Doherty picks up the remaining case types such as wills and probate, and domestic conveyancing.

The web address itself has that tricky '& Co.' part to it that we've encountered before. Luckily, it's a .com rather than a .co.uk, though, so confusion shouldn't be nearly as high. Obviously trying www.mcshane&co.com will never work, but neither will www.mcshaneandco.co.uk it seems. The name on its own will take you to different companies (i.e. www.mcshane.co.uk and www.mcshane.com) too. So once you know you're on the right site, it would probably be a good idea to bookmark it.

General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with McShanes Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.mcshaneandco.com), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
