Allsop Durn Solicitors in Ruislip: Review
Sometimes when looking for new firms to add to our network we're not starting from a completely ignorant position. Whilst it would obviously be impossible for us to come up with enough legal matters to truly test every firm we review - we certainly do our background checks and quite often get to know people at a firm before having them on board.
That's certainly the case for Allsop Durn as we'd worked with one of the titular staff members on a previous project. So does that make us bias enough to throw away 20+ years of impartial article writing? Well, if we've seen fit to add a firm to our network in the first place - then clearly we already think they are a positive choice. However we will explain why to see if you agree.
For example, Allsop Durn have a good chunk of a page talking about their fees. They list standard rates and some examples based on various case types. You'd think this would be common practice but out of the last dozen or so sites we've looked at - this is the only firm to do so. Flick through enough solicitors' sites and you'll start to think talking about fees is almost taboo.
Again, claiming a large amount of experience is something practically every law firm does. However this is something you can often check yourself with independent sources. The one we always recommend is local Law Societies. This firm is registered with The Law Society of England & Wales which has considerably more public information about it's members than most others. You're able to look up case ranges, any other offices, staff details and more. We're sad to say that our own native (Scottish) Law Society could learn a thing or two from the English/Welsh setup.
If you click the link to view details about the solicitors at the firm, you'll see there is certainly a range of experience amongst the staff. Godfrey Newman qualified in 1979, David Durn in 1999, right up to Tracy Murgatroyd in 2014. A good mix of 'wiser heads' whilst still having some fresh blood in the mix. Having a couple of fairly new solicitors eager to prove themselves at a firm that also has some seasoned experience to keep things on track - is a good balance. You certainly don't want a firm that treats legal matters the same as they did 30 years ago. We geniunely, 100%, not-making-it-up had a solicitor at one firm say to us "The Internet? No, we don't do that." Naturally, we have not recommended that firm to people.
These days people are very suspicious of testimonials on any company website. Us included. Allsop Durn don't actually have any on their website, but there are plenty on the third party boards such as Google, Trustpilot, Yelp, Yell.com and so on.
"A formal but personal service. I didnt know solicitors could have a sense of humour"
"Mark Goreham, was a professional, fantastic and supportive solicitor."
"dealt with our house purchase which became complicated because of a transfer of land. But we needn't have worried"
There were dozens of snippets to choose from. We also noticed someone at the firm has been responding to the positive comments where possible, thanking them for the glowing feedback. Is that uncommon? Yes. Is it a good thing? We think so. We would assume it means the firm actively takes feedback seriously and tries to keep an eye on it.
Just as a side note, if you do ever see a negative rating for a firm online - don't judge too quickly. Having crawled through thousands of reviews over the past couple of decades, we're accutely aware of just how regularly people make mistakes. We've had someone rant about 'capitalist law firms!' on our reviews and seen someone give a 1 star rating to a Divorce specialist for refusing to take on their Personal Injury case. (No ... really.) So always put the star ratings into context by reading the comments that go with.
A quick note on navigation. As the firm has decided to use two surnames for their firm title - you're unlikely to get it mixed up with others. The official website we link to above is www.allsopdurn.co.uk with www.allsopdurn.com not currently in use. Other tld variants or hyphenated (e.g. allsop-durn) domains are unlikely to be common mistypes so there are no real security concerns there. The only issue would be perhaps mis-spelling the Alsop. We also saw alot of searches for Allsop Durn Dearlove, but that seems to just be an older name for the firm. Maybe the 'Dearlove' part retired?
Between that, possible misspellings and the .com though - we would probably recommend that you bookmark the correct site if you plan on returning. Over the past few years there has been quite an upsurge of property clients being targeted by scammers trying to get them to use fake bank details. As this firm also handles property, always make sure to keep an eye on the email address you're being emailed from and the web address you land on as it's not always transparent. Anything about bank details or payments would never be discussed in an email anyway by a reputable firm. One last hopefully self-explanatory snippet from AD's website:
General Notes: Usually if Legal Aid is possible we've mentioned it above, but you can always ask. We haven't looked in depth at their recruitment program so are unaware of any job vacancies available. For a career with Allsop Durn Solicitors it's best to visit the website (www.allsopdurnllp.co.uk), check opening hours, and find the correct phone/email contact details. Simply emailing a CV to reception looks lazy. Each law firm's Law Society and/or SRA number should be on their site, usually at the bottom of each page.
